At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, new research on soft drinks and coffee and the risk of depression were presented.
A recent study conducted by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) showed that people consuming over 4 cans of soda per day had a 30% higher risk of developing depression than those who did not drink any soda. However, individuals consuming 4 or more cups of coffee per day decreased their risk by 10% compared to individuals who did not drink any coffee. Interestingly, the researchers found that “diet” carbonated drinks put soda drinkers at an even higher risk than those who drank the “regular” sweetened versions.
This evidence is preliminary and has not yet been published.
