Individuals who spend a great deal of time engaged in sedentary behaviors, such as watching television, playing video games, and working on the computer, tend to be less physically active and are at a greater risk for health problems. Since people can be mobile while on cell phones, researchers decided to investigate whether there was a relationship between cell phone use and sedentary behaviors.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, found that college students with the highest cell phone use had the lowest cardiorespiratory fitness. This is probably because cell phone are used for phone calls, video games, web searching and texting – all sedentary behaviors. Our society has become addicted to cell phones, and our health is suffering. It is important to be physically active and to limit cell phone use. Adults should encourage teens and young adults to be more active to prevent increased obesity, heart disease, and other health issues.
