New Flu Remedy: Elderberry

No one likes getting sick, and getting the flu can be very debilitating.  Some people get flu shots, while others take an array of herbal remedies and vitamins.  New research published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements presents evidence that elderberries can shorten the duration of colds and flu by boosting the immune system. Elderberries are usually consumed in syrups, lozenges, teas, capsules and oral drops. The elderberry extract has anti-viral properties and contains anthocyanins, which are antioxidants.  If you buy the actually elderberry, don't eat the leaves, which may be poisonous, and make sure to cook them before eating, because they may also be poisonous if eaten raw.
