Take Care of Your Thyroid

Often when people have issues with losing weight, feeling tired, anxious or depressed, or getting sick more frequently, thyroid function is assessed. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid is underactive and does not make or release the proper amounts of thyroid hormones.Theses hormones are responsible for metabolism and controlling the process whereby nutrients are converted into energy in the body, so when they are not working properly it is more difficult to burn calories and there is a decreased energy level. Additionally, thyroid hormones are responsible for regulating neurotransmitters which control your emotions and for helping the liver break down cholesterol and control triglyceride levels. Some causes of hypothyroidism include Hashimoto's thyroditis, which is an autoimmune endocrine disorder, poor diet, leaky gut, genetics, certain medications, very high levels of emotional stress, hormone imbalances, and inactivity.Diet is a very important tool to improve thyroid function. It should include plenty of  fiber, fruits and vegetables, preferably organic. Additionally, wild-caught fish, seaweed, bone broth and foods rich in probiotics are beneficial.  Certain vegetables may impair thyroid function and intake should be moderate. These include Brassica vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and Brussels sprouts, since they contain compounds called goitrogens which may impair thyroid function. Additionally, conventional dairy, gluten and sugar and processed foods should be avoided. There are many supplements that may be taken to help regulate thyroid function. They include L-tyrosine, vitamin C, selenium, foot, zinc, fish oil, ashwaghanda, probiotics and digestive enzymes. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of thyroid disease, you should ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels, including  TSH, free T3, free T4, TPO antibodies, and TG antibodies. Your thyroid function needs to be fixed in order to fix your gut-brain access and many other systemic bodily issues.
