Walking After Meals May Decrease Risk of Diabetes
A new study shows that the timing of exercise may be important for controlling blood sugar. The study, which was published in Diabetes Care, looked at the glycemic control of inactive adults over 60 years old. The results show that a moderately paced 15 minute walk after a meal (especially dinner) can effectively control blood sugar levels and therefore help prevent diabetes. The decrease in blood sugar levels last for three hours or more. Walking for 15 minutes after a meal seems to be as effective as a 45-minute walk for regulating blood sugar levels. This shows the importance of physical activity for diabetes care and prevention. Exercise is just as important as nutrition for blood sugar control.
