What is MCT Oil?

MCT oil is a type of saturated fat shown to increase cognitive performance and support weight loss. MCT stands for “Medium Chain Triglycerides” and they are better absorbed in the body due to the length of their carbon chains. Because they are easily digested, they permeate cell membranes more easily. They also exhibit a thermogenic effect in the liver which can increase your metabolic rate. Therefore they are often used for energy rather than stored as fat.

The four different types of MCTs are caprioc acid, caprylic acid, capric acid and lauric acid. Since theses are well absorbed, they are beneficial for those with digestive disorders, Crohn’s disease, leaky gut and gallbadder issues. MCTs can be found in coconut oil. They are also found in whole milk, full fat yogurt, butter and cheeses.

Some of the benefits of MCTs are improved gut and brain health, increased energy, better mood, and decreased cardiovascular disease. They also have antibacterial/viral/fungal properties and can help control inflammatory responses.
