Why Am I Chronically Fatigued?

Millions of Americans have symptoms of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia, and many cannot determine the cause of their illness. Chronic fatigue is defined as extreme fatigue that lasts over 6 months, while fibromyalgia is chronic fatigue with the added symptom of chronic pain. Other symptoms include  insomnia, poor digestion, headaches, and poor concentration. Multiple body systems are affected, including the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. Some causes of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia include chronic stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, hormone imbalances,  intestinal dysbiosis, and environmental toxins. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cells that are responsible for producing energy. When people have fibromyalgia, studies show they  have a decreased number of mitochondria in the cells, increased oxidative stress, and lower levels of coQ10. Dysfunctional mitochondria cause disruption in biological pathway.Diet is key to treatment. Focus on real foods that are anti-inflammatory and high in magnesium. Some research shows that  a low FODMAP diet helps fibromyalgia, especially if GI symptoms are present. Additionally, mitochondrial function can be improved with  calorie restriction, exercise,  and sleep. Supplements that repair mitochondria are  alpha lipoic acid, NAC, acetyl-L-carnitine and coQ10, B vitamins, L-carnitine and creatine and vitamin D. Relaxation techniques and infrared saunas also help repair the mitochondria and help increase energy levels.
