Alkaline Water - Worth the Hype?
Alkaline water is a water that is high in pH - making it more alkaline/basic than acidic. A pH level measures substances on a scale of 0 to 14. The lower the number the more acidic, while high numbers are more alkaline or basic. Regular drinking water usually has a pH of 7, while alkaline water has a pH of 8 or 9. Additionally alkaline water contains some key minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, which buffer acids in the blood. It also has a negative ORP (oxidation reduction potential), which means it acts as an anti-oxidant.Since diseases occur when the body is in a more acidic state, the theory behind alkaline water is that it can neutralize acid in the body and prevent the onset of disease. Advocates of alkaline water claim it increases metabolism and promotes weight loss, slows bone loss and improves nutrient absorption. Additionally, some research shows it improves symptoms of acid reflux, increases hydration and detoxification, stimulates the immune system, regulates blood sugar, and improves circulation. It also has been shown to have anti-aging properties. While there may be benefits to alkaline water, nothing is good in excess. Too much alkaline water and foods that are alkaline may cause alkalosis and an imbalance in the body and create health problems over long periods of time. It may also affect stomach acidity.
The best way to promote an alkaline environment in the body is to add more fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid foods that make the body more acidic, such as processed food, alcohol and caffeine.
