Biotin for hair and Nails

Biotin is a B vitamin which acts as a coenzyme in metabolism in order to provide energy to the body. It is involved in various functions involving the metabolic, nervous, digestive and cardiovascular systems.

Besides converting macronutrients to usable energy, other benefits of biotin include more balanced blood sugar, healthy skin/hair/nails, improved thyroid and adrenal function, improved memory, and reduced inflammation.

In particular, research shows that biotin can support enzymes and proteins needed for the growth of hair and the improved structure of keratin, which is the protein in hair. Further studies show biotin can improve weak and brittle nails. Additionally it can help improve acne and skin drynesss.

Taking biotin orally has been shown to have better results than topical biotin in beauty products. If you are taking a supplement, work your way up slowly to 3mg. Food sources of biotin include egg yolk, bananas, walnuts, pork, salmon, sunflower seeds, mushroom, milk and sweet potatoes.
