Blue Light and Sleep

Blue light is a short wavelength light in the visible light spectrum which can be seen by the human eye. It helps establish our circadian rhythm, which is the body's sleep and wake cycle.  It affects physiological and psychological processes such as mood, reaction time, alertness, sleep, memory, motivation, and feeling of wellbeing. The main source of blue light is the sun, and it is the reason the sky appears the color blue. Other sources of blue light in our modern world are florescent and LED bulbs and digital screens on TVs, smartphones, laptops, tablets and computers.Due to the increased use of screens, our exposure to blue light has risen, especially in the evening. This light, especially near bedtime, can affect our biological clocks and level of alertness and sleepiness. Research shows this light decrease melatonin which causes issues with staying and falling sleep.  Further, when sleep is disrupted, studies show an elevated risk of cancer, blood sugar issues and a decrease in leptin, the satiety hormone. Additionally, blue light can cause eye strain, fatigue and headaches. Some tips to combat blue light exposure are to use blue light glasses and to take frequent breaks from using the computer screen. Using warmer colors on the computer screen can also help decrease eyestrain. If possible, stop using all electronic devices 2-3 hours before bed.
