Craving Sugar?

Many people have cravings for sugar or just like the taste of something sweet. In fact, many clients tell me they get such a pang for sweets, they find it difficult to ignore their cravings, even if they are determined to eat healthier. Studies show that the more sugar you eat, the more you crave sugar, and it becomes an endless cycle that is hard to break. One thing that can cause sugar cravings are fluctuations in  blood sugar. When the diet is high in carbohydrates and low in fiber, protein and healthy fats, blood sugar rises and falls very quickly causing increased hunger and sweet cravings. To combat this, avoid processed carbs, and eat healthy protein and fats with your meals.Next, some research shows that sugar cravings are linked with a  magnesium deficiency. In fact, it is estimated that 50% of the population may be deficient in this mineral. To increase magnesium levels, include more magnesium rich foods in your diet such as avocados, cashews, salmon, seeds, bananas, beans, and wheat germ. A magnesium supplement often helps decrease sugar cravings and induce calming and decrease anxiety.Additionally, research shows that sugar is very addictive because it affects the opiate system in the brain. Further, a lack of sleep and stress can influence both the choices you make and create feelings of hunger for comfort foods.  It is important to break these habits by making both lifestyle and diet changes to improve relaxation, sleep and the addictive nature of sugar. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep, exercise and practice deep breathing to help break the  negative sugar cycle.
