Maddening Migraines
A migraine is defined as a debilitating headache, which may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light/sound, head pain, aura or visual effects. Auras are disturbances of the nervous system and include bright spots, flashes of light, vision loss, pins and needles in the arms or legs, weakness/numbness in the face or issues speaking. Migraines can last for hours or days and very often will interfere with activities of daily living.Occasionally, people may have warning signs a day or two before the onset of a migraine. These signs include constipation, fluid retention, food cravings, mood changes, and yawning. The causes of migraines are not fully known, but both genetics and the environment seem to play a a role.The most common migraine triggers include alcohol, wine, caffeine, aged cheeses, dairy products, processed salty foods, chocolate, aspartame, added sugar, refined grains, fried and fast food, nitrates, and MSG. Foods that can either prevent or treat migraines include foods high in magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids. Examples of high magnesium foods include spinach, avocado, swiss chard, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin seeds. Additionally, foods with high a vitamin B content can be beneficial, especially riboflavin, which is found in meats, green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds.Stress and lack/too much of sleep can also induce migraines as well as bright lights, loud sounds or strong smells. Changes in the weather, certain medications and intense physical exertion may instigate migraines. Skipping meals and extreme dieting an dehydration can also contribute to the onset of migraines. Lastly, hormonal changes in women can trigger headaches.Some supplements that have been shown to help with migraines are magnesium, riboflavin, feverfew, butterbur, omega-3 fish oil, kudzo, and 5-HTP.
