MCT Oil Benefits

MCT oil is a type of supplement called a medium chain triglyceride. It is a type of saturated fatty acid that is absorbed and used more easily by the body. During digestion they travel directly to the liver where they have a thermogenic effect, which enables them to be burned for metabolism rather than stored as fat. There are 4 types of MCTs: caprioc acid, caprylic acid, capric acid and lauric acid.

MCTs are beneficial to those with fat absorption problems, such as leaky gut, gallbladder issues, and IBD, since they are digested much easier than other fats. They have also been shown to help with weight loss and maintenance since it increases satiety and increases energy expenditure and fat burning due to its thermogenic effects. Additionally, MCTs have been shown to decrease cardiovascular disease and improve energy levels and mood.

MCT is beneficial to the gut since it has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties to help balance gut bacteria. They reduce bad bacteria without harming the good bacteria. This enables better absorption of vitamins and minerals and improved digestions.

MCT is not the same as coconut oil. Coconut oil is a great source of MCTs and contains around 65% of MCT. They are also found in palm oil, whole milk, full fat yogurt, butter, cheese and MCT oil supplements.
