Glutamine for the Gut
Glutamine is an amino acid found in foods with protein. It is the highest concentrated amino acid in the bloodstream and makes up a large percentage of skeletal muscles. Our bodies can produce glutamine, so it is not essential, unless needed in high amounts during certain disease states. Glutamine has been shown to improve digestion, brain health and increase muscle mass. It is also often used to heal leaky gut and ulcers.
Glutamine is very helpful for many GI issues including leaky gut, IBS, IBD, and diverticulitis. It reduces inflammation in the gut and can help resolve food sensitivities. Additionally, it helps maintain a healthy microbiome and improve mucus production in the intestines, which support healthy elimination.
Glutamine supports brain health because it is precursor the glutamate, a neurotransmitter int the brain. Additionally, it promotes muscle growth and improves athletic performance.
Food sources of glutamine include eggs, milk, bone broth, tofu, beef, beans, raw spinach, and red cabbage. It is also sold as a supplement in pills and powder form.
