Protein Powder for the Gut

Protein powders are powdered forms of protein that come from whey, casein, eggs, plants, rice, bone broth, collagen, and soy. Many individuals supplement with protein powders to promote muscle growth, increase calorie or protein intake, or improve exercise performance. They are also often used as meal replacements.

Whey and casein are the most popular types of protein powders, but for those with gut issues and dairy issues, it is not the best choice. Plant based proteins that are hemp, mixed vegetable, pea or brown rice have been shown to reduce inflammation. These are easier on the digestive tract. Additionally, bone broth or collagen proteins are good sources since they have been shown to improve leaky gut by mending the mucosal lining.

Remember that not all protein powders are equal. Some have high sugar content, added ingredients, fillers and not as much protein as indicated on the label. Make sure it is GMP certified and from a reputable company. Additionally, many people with digestive issues have issues breaking down protein, so start small and monitor your tolerance.
