The Gut-Skin Connection

Gut health plays a vital role in many health conditions, including the skin. In fact, research shows that individuals with gut issues such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, IBD and Celiac's Disease also have skin issues simultaneously. These  issues vary from lesions, ulcers, hair loss, acne, rosacea and psoriasis to  dermatitis. The gut-skin axis describes the relationship between the GI tract and the skin.  They are connected by the microbiome, which is the bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms that line the GI tract. When the  gut microbiome becomes imbalanced, which is called dysbiosis, some of the bacteria produce foreign antigens which create inflammation  in the body and effect the skin.In order to improve skin issues, try healing the gut first. This can be done by drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of fiber, since fiber is what feeds the microbiome and keeps it healthy. Also, good quality probiotic can help with skin conditions, especially lactobacillus and bifidobacterium.
