Symptoms of SIBO

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. It occurs when there is an excessive amount of bacteria in the small intestine. SIBO is usually responsible for about 70% of all IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Symptoms of SIBO include abdominal distention, nutrient malabsorption, diarrhea and/or constipation. Distention and bloating are often worse after starchy foods. Other symptoms can include nausea, weight loss, joint pain, rashes, eczema, acne, fatigue, rosacea and depression.

There are many possible causes of SIBO including dysmotility, diabetes, structural defects in the small intestine, IBD, chronic pancreatitis, Celiac disease, certain medications, certain surgeries and immune system disorders. It is always a good idea to get an colonoscopy to rule out any structural issues.

The best way to treat SIBO is through dietary changes that limit the starchy foods that cause issues. There are also antibiotics, herbal antibiotics and elemental diets that can kill off the bacteria. Lastly, many supplements are helpful in treating SIBO including digestive enzymes and probiotics.
