Niacin for Heart Health

Niacin, or Vitamin B3, is a water soluble vitamin with many functions in the body, especially related to the heart and brain. It is needed by cells to produce energy. Often, doctors prescribe niacin to improve heart health, especially cholesterol levels.

Research shows that niacin has improved total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL levels. Some research shows niacin can decrease triglycerides by 25% and increase HDL by 30%. Niacin is highest in chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, liver, peanuts, peas, mushrooms, avocado, sweet potato and asparagus. If taking a supplement, use niacin as nicotinic acid.

There may be some side effects associated with niacin, especially the “niacin flush” which may be accompanied with dizziness. Additionally some people experience itching, quick heartbeat, nausea/vomiting, high blood sugar levels.or gout. Consult your doctor if you have high cholesterol, especially if you are on a statin drug.
