What is a Fermented Food?

Fermentation is the process of converting carbohydrates in food to alcohol or organic acids by using yeast or bacteria in anaerobic conditions. It has been used throughout history as a means of preservation. Examples of fermented foods include kefir, yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, pickles, apple cider vinegar and kombucha. Additionally, wine, beer and some aged cheese are fermented.Fermented foods have been shown to have many benefits, especially to the gut. They contain probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria. These foods have been shown to increase the bioavailability of nutrients, improve digestion and gut flora, and enhance immune function. Other research shows that fermented foods help prevent H. pylori and cancer and treat arthritis and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease).Adding fermented foods to you diet is a great way to eat whole foods and improve your microbiome. It is a great alternative to taking probiotics.
