Why Grass Fed?
Food is expensive these days, and many people wonder if it is worth it to buy grass fed meat. What is grass fed meat and why is it healthier than grain-fed beef? Grass fed beef comes from cows that graze on pastures and eat grass and hay. Grain fed cows are usually crowded in small areas, fed soy, grain and corn, and are given antibiotics to promote larger, fatter animals that are more resistant to disease.Besides the treatment and conditions of conventional animals, from a nutritional perspective, grass fed cows are nutritionally superior. Grass fed beef has a better fat profile than grain fed beef. It has higher levels of omega 3s and CLAs (conjugated linoleic acid), which is a polyunsaturated fatty acid shown to decrease cancer and improve blood sugar. It also has less fat and cholesterol than conventional beef and therefore it is better for heart health. Additionally, grass fed beef has higher levels of B vitamins, glutathione, zinc, iron, potassium, and various antioxidants. If possible, it is well worth it to purchase grass fed meat. It is more nutritious, less likely to have harmful bugs and is just better for your body.
